– From the rooftop
If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But, if you have come because your
liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.
– Written by Lilla Watson, Australian Aboriginal Woman
As I prepared to begin chairing the Family Support Committee, a few years ago, I read this statement in the Operations Manual for the committee, provided by Habitat for Humanity International. I found it to be a profoundly thoughtful and powerful statement. I wanted this philosophy to be the inspiration and challenge guiding the Family Support Committee, as sponsor, advocate and friend, working alongside our Partner Families. In our belief that all people are God’s children, it is a Spiritual Journey we take together.
Earlier this year we were all saddened upon receiving the news that the Founder of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, died on the morning of February 3, following a brief illness. Founding Habitat for Humanity in 1976, Millard Fuller, has been described as a force of nature who turned a simple idea into an international organization that has helped hundreds of thousands of families move from deplorable housing into simple, decent homes they helped build and can afford to buy and live in. His commitment to affordable housing captured people’s imaginations and changed lives around the world.
Habitat for Humanity is an enduring yet changing ministry in its efforts to foster people-to-people partnership—it has moved from: “building houses for people in need” -to- “building houses with people in need”.
If the opening statement in this letter captures your heart, as it did mine, won’t you come and build houses together with us? There are many areas of need to be served through our local affiliate, Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity, and volunteers are key to accomplishing the task. We are welcoming of new volunteers who bring their talent, fresh ideas and a commitment to humbly serve.
Let us hear from you, please. If you would like to volunteer on our next build, please contact us at volunteer@wimberleyhabitat.org.
